Halcyon Creative Expressive Workshop with Rachael Pinks 29th Oct £45

£45.00

Our forthcoming exhibition explores moments & experiences in life that touch and fill us up - these are often called ‘Glimmers’ - Glimmers are small, everyday moments that can evoke feelings of joy, safety, peace, or calm. They can be sensory cues that help people feel connected and present, and can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Our lives are often full to brimming with these rich and resourcing moments - yet because of their fleeting nature and our stressful/busy lives they can often pass us by. It seems, to me, a fitting theme for a day long workshop as we head towards the festive period.

Join creative expressive practitioner, artist and mindfulness teacher Rachael Pinks for a creative arts workshop that explores the theme of our current exhibition ‘Halcyon’ - In a world where conflict, disharmony and doom scrolling feel ever present - are we able to find & maintain our own sense of inner peace? How might we create a sense of peace and calm within ourselves and our lives?

The English adjective halcyon “calm; peaceful; tranquil” is rooted in ancient Greek—and classical mythology. Halcyon ultimately derives via Latin alcyōn from Greek alkyṓn “kingfisher.” In ancient myths, the halcyon named a bird, usually identified with the kingfisher, that was said to breed around the time of the winter solstice in a nest floating on the sea, and was believed to have the power to charm the winds and waves into calmness. Halcyon frequently occurs in the expression halcyon days, a period of calm weather in the winter, historically a stretch of fourteen days around the winter solstice connected with (the myth of) breeding kingfishers. Halcyon days evolved to mean, more broadly, “a time of peace and prosperity,” and the adjective halcyon evolved to mean, variously, “calm; rich; carefree.” Halcyon is recorded in English by the late 1300s.

This is a day long workshop which offers the 5 participants time. space and support to explore how to soak up and make the most of the things that touch and sustain us in life. It can sometimes be difficult to soak these moments up as we move through our daily lives.. we’ll explore mindfulness ideas and find creative solutions so as we can be present with these moments and allow them to nourish us.

The day will be filled with sharing insights and experiences. We'll look at how mindfulness & creativity can support us to be happier in our daily lives and we'll work through some creative expressive tools too - which will include expressing ourselves via art/creatively.

No previous experience of art/creativity or mindfulness is needed: just a willingness to explore - this workshop is about our unique creative process/expression, feelings and thoughts around the theme, rather than our artistic abilities and skills.

The workshop starts at 10am and ends at approx 2pm. Materials, refreshments and lunch are all included in the cost of the workshop: which is held in the spacious, beautiful, calm and peaceful Old Lock Up Gallery.

A nourishing day long workshop in a held space where we will pause, connect and explore how to create a sense of peacefulness and calm in this busy and stressful world, what do we find nourishing and what sustains us. Finding ways to take notice of the abundance within our lives or how to begin to notice and create a sense of abundance.

We will come together to explore the theme in a gentle and guided way - with a sense of knowledge that all of our experiences and expressions are of value, welcomed & appreciated. And that within the group we will have many insights to share with one another.

The workshop will be a blend of:

Guided meditation.

Guided mindfulness practices.

Group discussion.

Creative art explorations: including simple book making as a visual record.

Creative tools that can be used as a ritual to let go of what drains us.

Self reflection.

Group reflection.

Halcyon - 10-2pm, costs £45. Rachael Pinks is an accredited mindfulness teacher and has a BA Hons in Arts Therapies.

This workshop is not a form of therapy, and in no way constitutes therapy. It is a space for participants to explore the theme creatively and with curiosity whilst receiving support and guidance. The outcome may be therapeutic, you may experience personal insights. And from this you may decide that you wish to explore the theme further either creatively or with further support.
