Old Lock Up Gallery, Cromford
On this two-day workshop, you will learn how to transfer and transform charcoal drawings into monoprints using a Gelli plate.
Artist Tansy Lee Moir will share the techniques she has developed from her extensive research into this method of drawing transfer and printmaking with charcoal. Through a mix of demonstrations, examples and
lots of hands-on practise, you will:
Learn how to transfer your drawing to the plate, apply your medium and make a successful print.
Quickly get started on a series of prints, working from simple photo references or your own choice of subject.
Experiment with a range of charcoal mark making techniques and observe how these interact with printmaking process.
 Create images using tonal blocks, textures, stencils and masks.
 Develop layered prints combining multiple drawing transfer elements.
 Troubleshoot printing problems and embrace happy creative accidents.
 Record and reflect on your printmaking results and your next steps.
The emphasis for the workshop is on the monoprinting process, to give you the knowledge and confidence to continue this accessible and satisfying printmaking method at home. At the end of the two days you’ll have a bundle of monoprints to inspire your next creative moves.
Further Information
No previous drawing experience is necessary – you will be supported and challenged to progress from where you are.
All materials and references will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own references to work from too.
 Please wear something you don’t mind getting messy.

About the tutor
Edinburgh based artist Tansy Lee Moir has been perfecting her charcoal techniques for the last 15 years, focusing her drawing practice on capturing the movement and growth of old trees. After a career in Community Arts, Learning and Development, she now works full-time as an artist and educator, exhibiting and teaching across the UK. She has had seven solo exhibitions, curated and participated in many group shows and has work in private collections around the UK, Europe and the USA.
